Life in a Nutshell

Created by Bruce 12 years ago
Beverly June Jurgens was born to June Forsha and Fred Jurgens in Ogden, Utah on March 20, 1923. In 1946 she married the first love of her life, Walter Bennion Welti of Salt Lake City, Utah. They moved to Mercer Island from Seattle in 1960 where they lived surrounded by woods, their dogs, cats, pigeons, a horse and four children. A passionate advocate for education, Bev volunteered for the Head Start program in Seattle, and worked to create an alternative school on Mercer Island. She was a long-time supporter of Planned Parenthood, where she served on the Board of Directors. In 1990 she joined the Women’s University Club where among her many activities, she served as Literature Trustee, tap danced and helped to create scholarships for underserved women. Beverly was an exquisite hostess whose graciousness and love of people created deep connections with so many grateful friends. With a lifelong love of music, she was an active supporter of orchestral and chamber music in Seattle. An accomplished pianist, she played duets for many years with her two dear friends Ruth Gerberding and Betty Lou Barton, as well as her son and granddaughter. After Wally’s death, Bev left Mercer Island for the vibrancy of downtown Seattle. She moved into a condo at the Pike Place Market where she met John Pehrson, the great love of her later life. Bev and John travelled widely and maintained a high level of social and civic connection. In 2009, they moved together to an apartment in Mirabella. Bev is survived by her beloved partner John Pehrson, sister Pat Shaub, four children: Jennifer Nebel, Susan, Rebecca and Bruce Welti, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
